2-DAY COURSE

2-DAY COURSE

[ 2-DAY COURSE: Making Collotype Tissue (process plate) and a postcard size print with your own image ]

On the first day, you will be taken on a special tour of Benrido’s Collotype Atelier where you can experience the skilled work and process of collotype carried out by the artisans in person. The tour will take you through our photography studio, plate-making room and print-making studio, which are not open to the public. Our instructor will then give a thorough explanation about the difference between the traditional collotype method and the new plate making process (collotype tissue). On the first day, you will be able to make your own plate by coating the photo-sensitizer onto the monochrome negative.

On the second day, you will then be able to make prints from two of your images on Japanese deckle-edged rice paper. This will bring more variation to your printmaking. At the end of the course you will be able to take home your finished prints.

Time 10:00 – 17:00 for both days *Please refer to the calendar on the right for the schedule

Participation Fee 30,000 JPY (including instruction texts, ink and material costs, 20 postcard sized deckle-edged Japanese rice papers and sales tax)

– Benrido Collotype Academy will be using a new process of plate making developed from the traditional glass plate. Participants will learn to use this new process which uses a monochrome negative (collotype tissue) as the plate for printing. This collotype tissue provides the base where the negative can be coated with the gelatin solution, infused with the DAS photo-sensitizer that is nontoxic to the human body and the environment.
– You will need to submit your image data to us at least one week before the course starts, in order for us to do the preparations.
– Please come wearing clothes you can get dirty in.
– Please bring your own apron, towel for hand-wiping and packed lunch.
