5-DAY COURSE

[ 5-DAY COURSE: Learn plate making, print making and make 8 x 10 inch size prints with your own images ]

During this 5-day course, you will be able to make prints in different sizes (from post card size to 8×10 inches) and to print on special Japanese rice papers, according to your own pace and wish.

On the first day, you will be taken on a special tour of Benrido’s Collotype Atelier including our photography studio, plate-making room and print-making studio – usually not open to the public. Next, our instructor will give a thorough explanation about the traditional collotype method and the new process (collotype tissue). You will then start preparing your own plates for printing. After learning the exposure and development process, you will be able to make prints using multiple plates. Depending on your progress, you might have some time to challenge yourself by retouching the original negative, spotchecking and adjusting the tones on your prints by using both tradtional and digital techniques.

Time 10:00 – 17:00 for all days *Please refer to the calendar on the right for the schedule

Participation Fee 75,000 JPY (including instruction texts, ink and material costs, printing papers suitable for your images, a matted frame for your favorite piece, and sales tax)

– Benrido Collotype Academy will be using a new process of plate making developed from the traditional glass plate. Participants will learn to use this new process which uses a monochrome negative (collotype tissue) as the plate for printing. This collotype tissue provides the base where the negative can be coated with the gelatin solution, infused with the DAS photo-sensitizer that is nontoxic to the human body and the environment.
You will need to submit your image data to us at least one week before the course starts, in order for us to do preparations.
– Please come wearing clothes you can get dirty in.
– Please bring your own apron, towel for hand-wiping and packed lunch.
